Overview and Criteria for Submission

For the 2009 VidFest Short Film and PSA Contest, UC San Diego's Sustainability Solutions Institute and Home International are asking college students to create a film and/or Public Service Annoucements (PSA) reflecting the theme "From Here to Sustainability: Changing the World One Film at a Time."

For the purposes of the film and PSA contest, we encourage entrants to be as creative as possible when interpreting the core idea of Environmental Sustainability.  What we're looking for are films and PSA's that adhere to the theme yet show a creative, unique and relevant perspective toward environmental sustainability.

CORE IDEA: From Here to Sustainability: Changing the World One Film at a Time

  • Together with our faculty, staff and students, UC San Diego is working to make the world a better place through better sustainability research, education and practices.

  • Films and PSAs should reflect this core idea, but HOW students do that is up to their own creativity.

  • Films and PSAs can take the perspective of an individual, a group, what students do on campus, in their  community or around the world, or merely an observation that fits into the core idea of environmental sustainability.

  • Films and PSAs can be a variety of genres – documentary, fiction, animation or even machinema.

  • Be creative! Have fun! And inspire us!

  • The Selection Jury will select the finalists in each category, and a distinct panel of judges will select the winners based on the following criteria:

  1. Creativity
  2. Relevance to the core idea of environmental sustainability
  3. Execution of the film- does the film effectively communicate the idea?
